The path of the polymath: From NYC agencies to global insights
Chris Stepanek’s career began at the epicenter of the late-1990s new media boom in New York City, launching nearly three decades of design leadership across global agencies, startups, and product ecosystems. With his education in industrial design, his trajectory has always been defined by systems, moving from early pixel-level execution to the strategic definition of complex products, platforms, and immersive physical experiences.
Parallel to his design career, Chris's strategic perspective is informed by a lifetime of physical discipline. His background spans becoming a snowboarder in the late 1980s, competing on the national stage as a sponsored slalom skateboarder, and years spent as a road cyclist, with all of it intertwined by his love of running in all forms. Through these high-stakes and endurance-driven pursuits, he developed a rigorous understanding of product testing, performance psychology, and the acute stamina required to maintain a creative edge over the long haul.
Today, Chris operates as a borderless independent creator, splitting his time between Taiwan, Japan, and the United States. This international vantage point gives him a unique lens on the digital landscape and the authenticity economy.
